How PGT and FET Can Improve Your Chances of IVF Success
In vitro fertilization (IVF) is an incredible tool for growing families, but its power goes even further with advancements like PGT (preimplantation genetic testing) and FET (frozen embryo transfer). PGT allows for the screening of embryos created through IVF, while FET involves thawing and transferring a cryopreserved embryo from a previous cycle into a surrogate or intended parent’s uterus. Together, these innovations are helping more aspiring parents maximize their chances of pregnancy success.
How PGT Identifies Healthy Embryos
A common reason for unsuccessful embryo transfers is the presence of genetic abnormalities. PGT helps ensure that the selected embryo has the correct number of chromosomes, which can reduce the likelihood of IVF failure or miscarriage.
Patients undergoing IVF with PGT will have a small number of cells from their embryos sent to a lab for testing. During this process, the embryos are cryopreserved and properly stored. Once the PGT results are ready, typically one to two weeks after the biopsy, the patient is notified of the results. If they have genetically normal embryos that are appropriate for transfer, they’ll schedule their FET.
The Benefits of FET
A frozen embryo transfer offers several advantages, including:
- Flexibility: Fresh embryo transfers take place immediately after egg retrieval. Alternatively, FET allows for the scheduling of the transfer at a time that is most convenient and optimal for the patient.
- Hormonal balance: Delaying embryo transfer until a later cycle allows hormones to normalize before proceeding, giving some patients a better chance at pregnancy.
- Success rates: FET has comparable success rates to fresh embryo transfers.
- Genetic testing: Embryos can be tested for genetic abnormalities (PGT) before freezing.
Learn More About PGT and FET
IVF is a complex process that can be as exciting as it is emotionally and physically challenging. PGT and FET can help increase the chances of pregnancy stress, allowing patients to undergo fewer IVF cycles and grow their dream families faster.
