IVF: In Vitro Fertilization
What is In Vitro Fertilization (IVF)?
In Vitro Fertilization, commonly referred to as IVF, is a highly effective and safe fertility treatment where a woman's eggs and a man's sperm are fertilized outside of the body in a laboratory dish- the term In Vitro Fertilization literally means "in a dish". After the eggs have been fertilized, they are closely monitored to ensure that they can develop in the most optimal environment possible. After 2-5 days, the embryo is transferred, through a process called embryo transfer, back to a woman’s uterus.
Advanced IVF Treatments:
Often times, other advanced reproductive technologies (ART) are paired with IVF, including intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI), embryo assisted hatching and preimplantation genetic testing (PGT). Board-certified fertility specialist Dr. Asmar will work with you to craft a fertility treatment plan that makes sense for you as you build your family.
- Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI):
ICSI is the process of inserting a single sperm into a single egg to achieve fertilization. Used in conjunction with IVF treatments, ICSI is necessary when there is low quality sperm (low concentration or motility) or if the membranes around the egg are preventing fertilization.
- Embryo Assisted Hatching:
When an embryo is placed into a woman's uterus, it must break out of its protective membrane in order to hatch and implant. In some women (especially mature women) the membrane is hardened, which prevents the embryo from hatching and implanting. In this case, a laser or weak acid is used to weaken the shell and enable hatching thereby improving chances of pregnancy. - Preimplantation Genetic Testing (PGT):
If your family has a history of genetic diseases, PGT is recommended. During PGT the embryos are tested for the specific genetic disease that runs in your family. Preimplantation genetic testing is also used for patients that suffer from recurrent miscarriages or several failed IVF cycles.
