PGT: Preimplantation Genetic Testing
What is Preimplantation Genetic Testing?
Preimplantation Genetic Testing, commonly referred to as PGT, refers to the biopsy of all the embryos after they have reached about 100 cells (blastocysts) and removal of a small sample of 4-5 cells from the shell (trophectoderm) of each embryo prior to placing the embryo back into the uterus (embryo transfer).
This allows us to identify and transfer only the healthy embryos with no chromosomal or genetic anomalies. PGT also improves IVF success rate and lowers risk of miscarriages and children born with abnormal chromosomes such as Down Syndrome.
Additional prenatal genetic testing is strongly recommended once pregnancy is established.
The biopsy samples from all the embryos are then shipped to an outside genetic laboratory for screening and testing for possible chromosomes and/or genetic disorders. The resulting embryos are frozen and stored.
The 23 pairs of chromosomes of each embryo may be tested for the following:
- Chromosomal anomalies or aneuploidy (PGT-A) such as Down Syndrome, and Gender Selection for Family Balancing.
- Single gene disorder (PGT-M) such as Tay Sachs, Cystic Fibrosis, Sickle Cell, Thalassemia, etc.
- Chromosomal Structural anomalies (PGT-SR) such as balanced translocations which cause recurrent miscarriages.
